As you may be aware, with the country in Lockdown, our planned VE Day 75 Celebrations is unable to go ahead, needless to say, we as a team are gutted that we are not able to bring the community together in Caldicot Town Centre to celebrate together. That does not mean however that we as a community cannot take part in the now national “stay at home” party!
We would love to see your pictures and videos of your street on Friday 8th May as you celebrate the event (at a safe distance from neighbours) in your own front garden.
We have complied bunting which can be decorated by children, (and bored adults!) Display them in your window, on your front door or on fencing and join in the fun. (download below)
The timings of the day are going to give us a poignant reminder of the war and all that it stood for.
At 11am, we’re encouraging people across all generations and communities to take part in a national moment of Remembrance and pause for a Two Minute Silence to honour the service and sacrifice of the Second World War generation and reflect on the devastating impact Covid-19 has had on so many lives across the world.
The Royal British Legion will be hosting a live VE Day 75 livestream on their website, which people are encouraged to watch and interact with. The link for the website is above.
The garden party starts, get outside in your front garden or on the street and celebrate this wonderful occasion with neighbours, be sure to keep a safe distance. dog out that picnic blanket, make some traditional British homemade sandwiches and of course scones and enjoy!
Solo buglers/trumpeters/cornet players to play the Last Post at 2.55pm from the safety of their homes, along with the Pipers undertaking Battle’s O’er and VE 75 years at 3pm local time in the country they are in,
Town Criers from across the country will be reading the script, Crying out for Peace, in towns and cities.
Tune into the BBC to watch their VE Day 75 Special program, A musical celebration.
People from around the United Kingdom are encouraged to belt out the glorious song that defines the war Vera Lynn’s ‘We’ll Meet Again, so don’t forget to practice the words before hand and record the display for our page.
