Permit Scheme Now In Force
The new permit scheme, set to reduce the amount of vehicles abusing current regulations and driving through the town centre came into force in December. A total ban of vehicles movements between 10am and 4:30pm is now in place.
7 businesses have been issued with permits, allowing their vehicles access into the town centre, mainly due to reasons of having no rear access to their premises. Additional signage is being created to add to the existing legal signage highlighting that only permit holders are allowed entry.
There are some exemptions including the post office and conversations are taking place with market traders to ensure that no stall holder vehicle movements are permitted before 10am and after 4:30pm. In addition, one off requests for access can be made at either the OSS or Police Station where a temporary pass will be issued.
Gwent police now have the power and authority to prosecute drivers who do not have a permit, however, members of the public and businesses are asked to be vigilant and report anyone ignoring these new rules to Gwent Police via 101, Twitter, Facebook or by speaking to a local officer or PCSO.
