The bridge has now been repaired, and is now partially reopen, Traffic lights are currently being used to allow vehicles to use the bridge, until a more permanent solution is found, ie, further repairs or replacement of bridge.

“Highways engineers inspected the site with contractors on yesterday and estimated the road could be closed for up to an additional seven days once repair works start on Monday, May 19th. Following completion of the repair works a single lane will be opened under traffic lights until a permanent solution is reached to replace the bridge.
Closure signs are in place and traffic will be diverted from Caerwent along the A48 to the Parkwall roundabout and the B4245 to Caldicot.”

The road to Caldicot from Caerwent is closed near the entrance to Canon Lane, due to structural instability of the bridge over the Nedern.
The Council has closed the road for safety reasons and the road is not passable.
It is likely to be closed for some time though we are seeking clarification as to how long. There are signs noting the closure of the road though many motorists are ignoring (or not spotting) these and are turning around in the entrance to Canon Lane. This is potentially dangerous as approaching cars cannot necessarily see vehicles which are reversing until the last moment.
